Summer 2011 Web Article Response #1

After reading about the 5 k-12 trends answer the following questions for each trend:
1. What are your personal experiences with each of the trends listed?
2. How do you personally feel about the trends? List them in the order you feel are most to least effective and explain why you feel this way.
3. Give an example of each trend that is not listed in the article.

Summer 2011 Web 2.0 Reviews

As part of your classroom requirements you must locate and review three Web 2.0 resources that could be used in the public school classroom (you may not use any of the 15 listed in the above link). Respond to this blog entry to "reserve" your websites. If you plan on reviewing a site or resource and it is already listed by a classmate on this blog entry you will have to select another. Your review should include the following information:

1. URL
2. Specific details about the organization or provider that hosts the resource (about us is a good place to start)
3. List specific functions of the resource with detail
4. How you would use the resource in your classroom

Chapter 2 - Self-Directed Lifelong Learning (Due June 23)
1. What are the four recommended steps (include some detail) for self-directed learning?
2. What are the advantages of a digital portfolio versus a conventional paper-based portfolio according to the text?

Chapter 3 - Supporting Student Creativity with Technology (Due June 23)
1. Read the section on creative thinking on pages 48-51. After you digest the information answer the questions on the top of page 50. "Several types of creative thinking are described next. Which of these terms are familiar to you? How are they similar? Different?"

Chapter 4 - Digital Tools that Support Learning (Due June 27)
1. This chapter lists the "Top 10 Things to Consider When Creating Websites (p. 88)." Do any of these points stand out to you? Why or why not?
2. What are the 5 steps in creating a digital story (include some detail)?

Chapter 5 - Developing Technology-Enriched Learning Environments and Experiences (Due June 27)
1. What are the 3 Common Instructional Groupings and what are the challenges each present to the classroom teacher?
2. Answer questions 1, 2, and 3 in the Apply to Practice section at the bottom of page 118.

Chapter 6 - Customizing Student Learning Activities (Due June 30)
1. This chapter discusses summative and formative assessments. In your own words discuss the differences and list a couple of examples of each. You may have to do some outside research on these two types of assessment to get some good examples.
2. Figure 6.5 on page 148 describes Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. Look over the list and offer your response to the statement, "Any uniform approach to education - including a uniform approach to assessment - is bound to appeal to a minority and alienate or frustrate the rest."

Chapter 7 - Assessment and Evaluation (Due July 7)
1. Read the "Stories from Practice" section on page 162. The statement is made that, "It had helped to break down communication barriers between her and the parents, many of whom were in two-income families and did not have the opportunity to visit the classroom as often as parents did when she began her career." What is your reaction to this statement and is it a good or bad thing that parents aren't around as much as they used to be?
2. Rubrics are either analytic or holistic (page 179). What are the differences between the two types and which one would fit best into your teaching style and why? See examples of both in figures 7.10 and 7.11 on pages 180-181.

Chapter 8 - Selecting and Maintaining Digital Resources (Due July 7)
1. Read the "Stories from Practice" section on page 190. What do you see are some advantages of giving you students the opportunity to show you how to use some technologies? Are there any disadvantages?
2. Open-Source software is a growing category of software available to schools and businesses. Research some popular open-source titles and list them.

Chapter 9 - Modeling and Facilitating Use of Digital Tools (Due July 11)
1. What are the 5 tips for Communicating with Parents and the Community listed in this chapter? Which of those tips do you feel you are best at and why? Which one do you struggle with and why do you think that is?

Chapter 10 - Safe, Legal, and Ethical Use (Due July 14)
1. What are Acceptable Use Policies? Does your county have one? If possible, provide a link to your county's AUP.
2. Answer question 1 in the "Apply to Practice" section at the bottom of page 260.
